Originally from Grenoble, like his friend the anarchist painter Jules Flandrin (1871-1947), with whom he studied under the master Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) in Paris, he broke with the Parisian artistic milieu in 1900 when he took the habit at the Benedictine Abbey of En Calcat in Corsica.
