Prepared by S.A. Mitchell for inclusion as plate nos. 41 in the 1872 issue ofMitchell's New General Atlas. Missouri played a pivotal role in the events leading up to the Civil War. The Missouri Compromise, which allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state, stipulated that all future states north of Missouri's southern would not hold slaves.
