Absolutely wonderful

by  justin_h,   janv. 18, 2007

Pros:  EXCELLENT sound quality

Ease of use including connection to phone

Price

Size and style

Cons:  I don't know how comfortable the over ear hook will be. Other than that, none.

The Bottom Line:  Best sound quality on both ends I've found of all products tried.

Great price

Very small, form factor not bad looking or likely to draw attention.

Avis d'auteur

This headset is wonderful. The sound quality on my end and on my interlocutor's (the person I'm calling) end is phenomenal. No one so far has been able to tell that I'm not using the cell phone handset itself. I LOVE IT.

Tech details: I'm using it with a Samsung SGH-807 slider (Cingular), so the fact that the headset is made by the same company as my phone may be a factor. I haven't tried it yet with my wife's Nokia 6102i.

It claims a 4-hour talk time with a 70-hour standby time. You charge it by placing it within a small black box which you then connect to the wall plug (so far there are no car charging or USB charging options, though I hope they come out with those at some point.)Edit: I checked out Samsung's website today and noticed that you can purchase both an earhook attachment and a car charger for the WEP200, though the earhook is currently out of stock. So now I recommend this unit with no reservations whatsoever! You can't charge the headset without the little carrying case, so with my tendency to lose small items, I just leave the carrying case attached to the power cord.

The earpiece is very small; it must be one of the smallest on the market. The box says it's 40mm long; it's roughly the length from the tip of my thumb to the first knuckle. I have a reasonably trimmed beard, and when I'm wearing the headset and looking straight ahead, I can't even see that it's on because even the short length of my facial hair hides the thing.

The (potentially) bad:
Keeping it in the ear is the only (potential) problem; if you've researched this headset elsewhere, you may have noticed that some have sent it back or had to devise fixes for it.

The headset does not come with an over-ear hook or neck strap (nor are either available, to my knowledge. EDIT: an ear hook and car charger are now available--see above). Rather, it includes three sizes of rubber ear pieces of differing sizes that hold the thing in your ear. It's sort of trial and error getting the right size and even then getting it to stick really well, but I think I've got it down now.

Some have suggested substituting with foam earpieces from earbud headphones or simply cutting off the little loops on the Samsung-provided rubber ear pieces; both fixes worked well for those who tried them. I'm considering the latter if I continue to have difficulty.

I should be clear, though, that, for me, the sound clarity and overall quality of the unit far outweighs the slight difficulty in getting the thing to fit my ear correctly.

Reason I bought the Samsung WEP200 After a lot of research, I decided on the Blueant X3 micro, which had a lot of qualities that I was really attracted to; problem was, NO ONE COULD HEAR ME on the other end. I don't care how many wonderful conveniences a headset has, if it can't perform its most important function, it's not worth much. So I sadly returned it back to Amazon.

The other headset I tried was my wife's Scala 500, but had the same complaints from people I called (though not as bad as the Blueant.) My wife loves the Scala and has received no complaints--maybe her headset, who knows.

The price also is extremely reasonable. I bought mine from Amazon.com for a steal.

UPDATE (17 Feb '07): I've been using the WEP200 for six weeks now, and wanted to say that it's still incredible. Sound quality continues to be excellent, and I worked out a fix for keeping it in my ear (which I have to credit to someone whose site/review I've unfortunately forgotten).

I took one of the included earpieces, and cut off the little half-loop with some nail clippers. Then I slipped on a foam earbud cover from an old set of cheapie earbuds I haven't used in years, and the thing fits perfectly.

Once again, let me reiterate: I love this headset. It's one of my favorite, favorite things!
